One of the most common questions I receive is what to wear for family photos. Given that I was a photographer for quite a number of years, this is one of my favorite questions! I love styling families and putting together outfits that flow together well. When I was a motherhood photographer, I even had a wardrobe for mother’s to choose from so that they didn’t have to stress about what to wear! I am so humbled to be working with Old Navy today (one of my favorite brands) to talk about how to pull together some seriously cute looks for pictures and for Thanksgiving!
What to Wear for Family Photos
Let’s start with mom! We always think of ourselves last, am I right?! Well this time I want you to think of yourself FIRST. Figure out what you want your outfit to be and then base everyone elses’ off yours. It can be really tricky getting all the outfits to flow together as it starts to get cold out because that means more layers! For my outfit I decided to keep it very simple with white denim, white top, black coat and a pop of FUN with leopard heels! I am a true believer in wearing white year round and I love wearing it through the holiday season because it’s so refreshing! I typically say to keep to a relatively small color scheme. So pick a few colors you want to include in the family outfit and then stick with those throughout! For this family photo, I stuck to black, white, gray, and a little pop of leopard and plum!
Huge shout out to my amazing friend, Kat from Catherine King Photography for helping me with these images and letting us use her Christmas Tree mini setup!
SHOP my OUTFIT >> Coat –> wearing size XS, size down one for a more fitted look
White Top (SO soft, this is the one I shared in my IG story the other day) –> wearing size small
Rockstar denim (THE BEST) –> I have these in several colors and I am wearing a size 4 here, they run TTS! These are also their “stay white” line – which means that they don’t stain – I can personally tell you that they don’t, they’re amazing!
Leopard Heels –> TTS, sizes are selling out fast – RUN.
Another one of my favorite picks is this pair of blush velvet skinnies – beautiful for the holidays!
Next up? Dad! My husband likes to keep his style pretty simple and straight forward. It’s fun to mix a little bit of basic print into the family photo for a pop! We chose to have him wear this great gray flannel top and added the plaid scarf that is perfect for the holiday season! The print also helps to tie all of our outfits together! Add a beanie for warmth and some really cool gray kicks to finish the look!

Flannel Top // my husband loves this because it’s a slim fit, which means that it becomes narrower towards the waistline!
Lastly, let’s talk about the little ones! When I saw that fur vest, I just KNEW that we needed to use those for the outfits! It adds dimension and I love them! Plus, it was 25 degrees outside and they helped keep them warm when we were out there snapping away! My oldest has on this really cute tutu dress that comes in a TON of colors. It’s great for the holiday season and for layering! Ellie (my 2 year old) is wearing one of my favorite polka dot sweaters and this adorable plum tutu skirt! I love that their outfits fit their personality and they loved being able to twirl around in them! Choose pieces that they will be comfortable in and find some cute hats if it’s going to be cold out!
If you are looking for a way to get through the pictures without any one throwing a tantrum, bring some Smarties with you. They won’t melt in your hand and they are the perfect bribing treat to get them to smile on cue 😉 It also helps when there is someone behind the camera with a squeaking duck 😉

This little stud is looking mighty fine in his trapper hat and fair isle sweater! I swear that Old Navy items get cuter and cuter each year! I wanted him to compliment what my husband was wearing so I chose the same color palette and then added the two patterns that are great for the holiday season!

I hope that this post helps you put together a little family photo for your Christmas cards this year or gives you an idea of how to get everyone to “match” for Thanksgiving! Here are a few more of my favorites 🙂
** We didn’t have Miles in a few of the family ones because it was SO cold that we left him in the warm car until the very last second so he didn’t get cold 🙂 It’s so hard for babies to regulate their body temperature when they are young!
