What to Pack in Your Birthing Hospital Bag

I packed an excessive amount of things when I went into labor and I definitely did not need all of them, however there was a few things that I was really happy I had. Now, some of these are not “life or death” items, but they will make you feel more at home when you are laid up in a hospital bed for 24+ hours (and trust me, they will make you feel so much better).
Slippers: I was so happy I brought mine. I wore them while I was walking the halls during labor and to and from the bathroom. You may want to buy a pair that is cheap, since most of the hospital floors are dirty! I like these ones here – cheap!
Baby Mittens: Little Liv wanted to constantly scratch her face and these mittens were on her for the first 4 weeks of her life. Pack of 2 for $3.50 here!
iPod: It was great to have my iPod & dock while I was in labor so that I could zone out for a bit and forget about the pain. I even made a playlist in preparation! This dock is only $40!
Towels: Unless you want to be wiping down your body with a towel the size of a face cloth, I recommend bringing your own 😉
Snacks: You won’t be able to eat during the labor process, but you will want a snack after you give birth. Most of the time, the cafeteria is closed and that leaves you with saltines and graham crackers that the hospital floor has in stock. Bring some things that you will be craving.
Pajamas: If you are going to be nursing, invest in a few pairs of the button up front pajamas. I still wear them all the time because it is so easy to nurse in them!
Your favorite toiletries: When you finally get to shower after your labor and delivery (in my case, 18 hours) you will be so happy you packed your favorite toiletries. Just the scent of an amazing body wash will make you feel like a million bucks. Trust me on this.
Pillow: I work in a hospital and you will want your own pillow to lay your head. Again, trust me.
Weekender Bag: To place all of your goodies!
Nursing Bra: This is my favorite nursing bra of all time. I tried a few of them and this one is by far the comfiest and I wear it to death. I am finally investing in my second one because it’s just not sanitary to wear the same bra every single day. Right?! 😉
PS. I cut and pulled out the underwire of the bra because the wire can actually lead to mastitis (rarely, but still…) It’s also more comfortable for me without it anyways! 🙂
Refresh Oil: Feels great while giving birth and afterwards as well. It also helps with morning sickness!
Underwear: You will probably wear the hospital “underwear” directly after birth because you won’t want to ruin your own. These from Target have been my go-to following birth because they are so comfortable. You will still look about 6-7 months pregnant after giving birth so buy a size up for comfort!

  1. Great tips! Your first couple links don’t work though (the mittens & slippers) – also, what is refresh oil? xo

  7. I found this post through Pinterest. (I have since read many of your other posts…congrats on expecting baby #2!) I am 32 weeks along with my first. This post is very helpful, but the links for the nursing bra and underwear are broken. Can you please let me know what items they are? Thanks!
