Summer Activities in CT with Kids

Connecticut has been a dream move for us (we used to live in MA) because I feel like there is so much more to do now that we are on the shore than when we were landlocked! CT is such a beautiful place to live and I NEED to have all four seasons so I wouldn’t be able to go anywhere else. Growing up with winters seems like the norm to me and I wouldn’t be “home” without a little snow 😉 In the summertime, CT (especially along the shoreline) has some of the best things to do for families and we have tried to enjoy all of them this summer before little nugget decides to arrive! I created this list of summer activities in CT that you can do as a family (plus, some activities that you can do anywhere)! I hope you enjoy it!

One of the girls new favorite activities is going ANYWHERE with their new all terrain Radio Flyer wagon that we customized! I had no idea you could build your own wagon and put any bells and whistles you wanted to! The girls favorite part? The built in speakers that you connect to your phone to play music! As you can tell from the video below, Ellie loves to jam out 😉 Recently, we brought the wagon to our town beach and rode it along on our walk with Winston and the girls brought some snacks and loved every minute. It’s also great to bring to any nearby fairs or concerts for the kids to enjoy!

Radio Flyer hosted a kid’s travel agency event recently to celebrate 100 years of imaginative play and encourage kids to get out and play! Radio Flyer has been around for so long that I remember my wagon as a child and my mother used to let me fill it with all of my stuffed animals and we used to go for walks around our neighborhood with it. Some of my fondest memories were with that wagon and you cannot argue with a great brand that makes a long lasting product that can last 100+ years. I love that they have come out with so many different models and you can now build-your-own bikes, trikes, wagons and more!

Another great activity to do with the kids? Splash pads! There are so many in CT and they are a great way to spend a hot summer morning! You can head over here to check out all of the splash pads they have here in CT. Do you want to head to a bigger water park for the entire day? Try out Chelsea Piers or  Quassy Amusement Park! A great way to stay cool during this crazy summer heat!

Thankfully we live about 10 minutes from the ocean and it has been a lifesaver for me during this summer and pregnant with baby #3. Taking the girls to the beach means that I can mostly sit there while they play in the sand and water and move very minimally (since this heat is taking such a toll on my 39 week body)! If you live farther up in CT, plan a day at the beach with your family! Check out some of the fun places to eat nearby and make it a full day affair! My favorite beaches? Hammonasset, Rocky Neck & Silver Sands!

Fairs and festivals are some of my favorite things to hit up during the summer and fall. CT has some amazing festivals throughout the year and I have so many written on our list for fall! Coming up? There’s an amazing hot air balloon festival in Plainville August 25-27 that I heard is great and we would love to be able to make it to that this year! Also on the list: Shoreline wine festival, Woofstock 2017, and the concert series in Madison and Guilford!
If you are a local to CT, I would love to know what you are up to this summer! Any must see events?!

  1. I lived in CT until I graduated from college and I miss it everyday. Some favorite things to do in the summer are heading to Hammonasset or Rocky Neck and then eating at Lenny and Joe’s on the way home. The carousel was my favorite part when I was little. Going to Mustic Seaport, plus stopping in Noank to go to Abbott’s (can you tell I’m hungry right now?). I grew up in the NW corner so going to Kent Falls and Mt. Tom were also favorites. I love the Goshen Stampede and in the fall the Goshen Fair. Also the Durham Fair is really good. Picking apples/blueberries/strawberries at Lyman Orchards, or Ruwet Farm, or Evergreen Berry Farm. Other fun things were watching the race cars at Lime Rock Park, tubing on the Farmington River at Satan’s Kingdom or People’s State Forest, and going to White Memorial Conservation Center and walking the trails and learning about local wildlife,
