Now that I have two births under my belt I think that I am in a pretty good place to give a bit of advice when it comes to the best things to have handy after giving birth. I also polled my #latenightnursingfeed to see what they had to say as well! So if you are preparing for birth and want to know what’s going to be the most helpful, keep on reading!

10 Things you need for your postpartum body

1.) Tucks Pads & Peri Bottle –> “Padsicles”// So the secret to healing fast and being more comfortable is a combination of those fancy mesh panties they give you, a diaper pad and then a layer of these Tucks pads. They are cooling and feel like absolute heaven after birth. Stock up. Oh, and that peri bottle. Bring it EVERYWHERE. Fill it with warm water and squirt it every time you pee!

2.) Heating pad or instant heat packs // They have these in the hospital (or at least in mine) but you should stock up on some for home as well. The heating pad is a bit limiting since you can’t move around with it but I would take the instant heat packs and stick them on my lower back (tucked into the band of my leggings). I had terrible back labor with both kids and these heat packs felt SO good.

3.) Motherlove Nipple cream & Soothie Gel pads // Okay. I am about to tell you my secret to healing cracked, bleeding nipples. I feel like somewhat of an expert considering my nipples were destroyed with each baby when they were born. For the first 48 hours, nurse and then when you are done, squeeze out extra milk and apply it to the nipple. Then place the soothie gel pads on. Do this after every nursing session for the first 48 hours. After 48 hours, nurse, apply breastmilk and let them OPEN to air. Leave them open as much as possible. Apply motherlove nipple cream each time as well. So… in a nutshell…

1.) FIRST 48 hours. Nurse. Apply breastmilk. Apply soothie gel pads. Repeat.

2.) AFTER 48 hours. Nurse, Apply breastmilk. Apply nipple cream. Let open to air.

Mine felt better and almost completely healed in 5-7 days.

4.) Pamper Products // My two favorites are my Aveeno® Positively Radiant® Daily Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 15 and Aveeno® Positively Radiant® Skin Brightening Daily Scrub. I have used both of these products since college. The facial lotion is my favorite. It’s not greasy and it has never cause me to breakout. It’s easy on the skin and even has SPF in it! You need the daily scrub for that first shower following birth. FYI, this shower will be the best shower you take in your life. I don’t know what it is but I remember after both children, LOVING that first shower. PS. Your skin will look better and better the longer you use them (especially when used together)!

5.) Sitz Bath with Herbs // If you have any issues down there after birth, which 99% of us do, you will be happy to have one of these fancy sit baths on hand. Soak in it a few times a day if you can manage it. It will help heal things faster!

6.) Maternity clothing or something similar // BECAUSE you will still look pregnant. Hate to break that news to you but it’s true. I still looked 6 months pregnant after giving birth, but because my babes were outside of the womb, the extra skin just sags down. It’s cute!

7.) A comfortable nursing bra // These ones here are my favorite and perfect for around the house!

8.) Nursing tanks // I hardly ever wear a bra. I usually just throw on one of these tank tops under every shirt I own. It’s perfect for nursing because when you lift your shirt up, your belly isn’t hanging out since the tank top is there! 

9.) Stool Softeners // I totally ditched mine after a few weeks and it was a HUGE mistake. Without going into too much detail…. trust me when I say – TAKE YOUR STOOL SOFTENERS. MMMMM kay?

10.) Squeem Abdominal Binder // Gives you great core and back support and it also helps to get you back into those pre-partum clothes faster! Perfect if you plan on having babies back to back as well! 🙂

  1. I am personally CFBC so I’ve never experienced these things, but…as it turns out, my husband will be a grandpa in July (and I will be a bonus grandmother 🙂 ). I will share this with my stepdaughter – it is her first and I am sure she’d love to know this in advance!

  3. I think I used some of these things when I gave birth too. Same with you, I just tried a stool softener (aka psyllium fiber) on my first week and after that, I stopped taking it.

  4. I have not had a baby, but I do have friends who went through the experience. I Aveeno has such a great product line and I love how great you skin feels after using it. I will have to pass this information a long to my friends to see what they think of this post.

  5. Yes yes yes to all of those, especially the down there assistance! I just had my first and was not prepared for how “damaged” down there would be. This is a great post, wish I could have found it beforehand to prepare myself.

  6. This is all of the information I wish I had before having my first child! So many things that you just don’t know unless you’ve been there done that. With that said, these are all great suggestions and are perfect for any mom or mom to be.

  9. I love this. I may share it next week on my blog. As a doula, I see so many women so focused and excited about the birth of their baby they often forget about planning to take care of themselves after. This list is a great list of practical things moms will need.

  10. Yup, my go-to’s after birth were a sitz bath with herbs, nipple cream and “padsicles” (though mine were more DIY – pads in the freezer – I didn’t know there was an actual product!).
