I am going to preface this post with the fact that I feel incredibly blessed to be able to have been given the opportunity to become pregnant four times total and wanted to share my tips and tricks to getting pregnant with you all. Now, a lot of this is completely out of one’s control and ultimately, our bodies will do whatever they want but I do think there are steps you can take to prepare your body for pregnancy and make it more likely each month 🙂
Tips & Tricks to Getting Pregnant
The first time around was a one time and pregnant type of deal. We were super surprised given that we came off birth control the month before and didn’t expect anything the first month! But there it was! A positive test and we were stoked! With our second pregnancy, it was a bit of a different scenario. We tried for a few months while I was still breastfeeding and always ended up with a negative result. I weaned our first around 14 months and a few months later became pregnant. Unfortunately, we lost this baby in December 2014. The next month, January, we became pregnant with our second little nugget. Ultimately, I don’t think my body is able to get pregnant while breastfeeding. Even though my cycle had been back for months and seemed regular, and my ovulation sticks were positive, something was off. Since I wanted to breastfeed until at least 1 year, I weaned for a few weeks thereafter and was able to get pregnant after that. I do know some mothers that are able to get pregnant while breastfeeding as well, so it isn’t unheard of!
This third pregnancy was pretty similar. Unable to get a positive until after weaning our second. It took a few months after the weaning as well. I think that everyone’s body is so different and hormone levels will vary so significantly. There are so many factors that come into play and being patient and relaxed will help aid the process. You can purchase your e.p.t. test at your local Walmart!
With every pregnancy, we used e.p.t. to confirm that positive. You may get that positive result up to 5 days sooner and in my case, I was on post ovulation day 11 when I confirmed my positive results. This means that I was able to see that + before my menstrual cycle was due!
That leads me to my number one tip. Don’t stress and stay relaxed. The less you think about actually getting pregnant, the faster you will actually become pregnant 😉 This is obviously way easier said than done and I know how devastating it can be at the end of your cycle and coming up with a negative result. Make sure to stay busy, go out with friends, take trips, and most of all take care of yourself.
Taking care of yourself and eating well with exercise will only help prepare your body for pregnancy. Eating foods that are healthy and nutrient rich are key! They have also found the following to be helpful while trying to conceive: whole milk products, leafy greens, whole wheat products, fish – salmon is my favorite, and olive oil! If you don’t currently exercise, that’s okay! Create a goal to work towards. Sign up to walk a 5k and walk daily to achieve your goal! The healthier you are before you get pregnant, the healthier the pregnancy will be!
I have read a few different theories on this but overall with the mamas I have polled, this seems to be the winner! Having intercourse every other day during your fertile window will give you the best chance at conceiving!
Last but not least, don’t forget that prenatal vitamin! Take them daily for at least a few months before you want to conceive. Not only is it important to take them during pregnancy, but leading up to conception as well.
