Newborn Clothing Essentials

While preparing for our first baby, I remember thinking about what I needed for newborn clothing essentials and going completely overboard. I had way too many “newborn” size onesies and not enough 0-3 and 3-6. Olivia didn’t even get to wear newborn size clothing because she was born almost 8 lbs and never fit into any of it! Miles & Ellie were even bigger and I made sure to stock up on the necessary bigger sizes the next two times. This blog post will go over what I think are the newborn clothing essentials and how many I think you need for each! Keep in mind that there will be days where you may go through 3-4 outfits due to blow out accidents, spit-up and pee accidents (those boys will get you every time)! I will also be chatting about Jaclyn Smith’s new line at KMART for babies! Wait until you see these adorable onesies she has for boys and girls, they are adorable!

Okay, so let’s talk about long sleeved footie onesies. My kids lived in these every single day! Each of my kids, except for Miles, was born in fall and it was chilly outside already so I stocked up on these! I think that these are definitely the most practical of all newborn clothing to purchase. If your baby’s due date is in the dead of summer, then I would stock up on short sleeve or tank body suits! Miles lived in those for the first 1.5 months because it was still so hot around here! Now that it’s getting chilly, we have switched over to the long sleeved footies!

MUST HAVE: Long sleeved footie onesies

HOW MANY? I would make sure to have at least 10-15 of these in size 0-3 and 3-6. I would personally skip the newborn sizing because my babes were all huge. but for anyone else I would recommend getting 6-8 of newborn sizing for the first few weeks!

If you’re having a summer baby…..

Stock up on the short sleeve or tank bodysuits in the same amount as above!

Miles is wearing one of the onesies from this 3-pack here! This one is my favorite of them all!

I would also stock up on short sleeve bodysuits no matter what season your baby will be born. During the winter, I put one of these on under my babies’ pajamas to keep them warm since they aren’t allowed to have any blankets. If it’s really cold where you live, stock up on some long sleeved bodysuits too!

MUST HAVE: Short and Long Sleeve Body Suits

HOW MANY? I would get at least 8-10 of the short sleeve and 8-10 of the long sleeve! You won’t want to be doing laundry daily so just make sure  you have enough for a few days! The long sleeved ones can be used underneath pajamas at night but also during the day with pants as an outfit during the fall and winter! Again, concentrate on sizes 0-3 and 3-6. Miles was only in size 0-3 for 3 weeks and now he’s in 3-6! Honestly, I think he will be in 6 months in just a few weeks! You never know how fast your baby will go!

Let’s talk about pants! If I am being honest, it’s just a lot easier to do the footed onesies than to have a separate bodysuit and pants! They make diaper changes easier but there are definitely some adorable pants/bodysuit sets so I do stock up on those too!

MUST HAVE: Pants or Shorts (depending on the season your baby will be born)

HOW MANY? I would only buy about 5-6 of these in each size, 0-3 and 3-6

Lastly, let’s talk about all the rest of the goodies that will be thrown at you! Hats are not necessary unless it’s the dead of winter and then you’ll definitely need them! When your baby is first born, you may want to get one of those lightweight caps for their head to keep them warm but other than that, I don’t think they’re necessary! I used to love using bonnets for my girls, but they were more of an accessory than a necessity. You will want to scoop up a few pairs of socks so that you have something for their feet when they wear pants and it’s cold out! I never used a coat on my infants during the winter because you can’t put them into their car seat with a big puffy coat, I just used a warm fleece car seat cover, so coats are not necessary! I never buy any tops or sweaters when they’re little because you always need something underneath them. If you don’t put a onesie underneath, they just have bare skin exposed all the time and they get cold so I just skip on them all together! If I find a really cute sweater, sometimes I scoop it up but not usually!

MUST HAVES: Lightweight hat & warmer hats if it’s winter

HOW MANY? 1 lightweight hat and 1 warm hat (if the season calls for it)!

MUST HAVES: Socks

HOW MANY? 1 pack of 3-5

That about covers it! You don’t need much to make it through! Make sure you read up on getting baby poop stains out of their clothes too because that is certainly a tough one! Have fun getting your little baby’s wardrobe ready! He/She will be here before you know it! Enjoy those baby cuddles!

Love your suggestions on what you need. Except I listened to advice from many people that said “don’t buy newborn clothes, they won’t fit for long” – but my son was born 7lb 14 oz and wore newborn clothes for 5 weeks! Because I had listened to everyone, we only had about 4-5 outfits that fit him and I had to do laundry sooo much to keep up! He’s 2 months old now and still wearing 0-3m or 3m clothes. I thought for sure he’d be in the bigger sizes by now, but nope, he’s still a tiny little peanut!

My son was born the same day as Miles and he was 9lbs 8oz. My daughter was only 7lb even so we only brought NB size to the hospital for Andrew. Poor bub never fit a slew of clothing!

Is this new Kmart brand soft fabric or more stiff? I would love to order as a gift but I want it to be a nice soft material for a newborn!

    Thanks,
    Megan
